Call for Otto von Guericke Scholarship 2026 for Sponsoring an International Student
In 2026 the Otto von Guericke Scholarship will be allocated by the state capital Magdeburg
and OVGU Magdeburg for the 24th time.
The scholarship of 6.000 Euros is aimed at international students at the university who are studying in bachelor's and master's programmes in the 2026/27 academic year. The scholarship aims to recognize and promote outstanding academic achievements as well as special social commitment.
All academics of OVGU have the right to submit proposals for potential scholarship
holders. International students can also apply by themselves.
Nominations and applications can be submitted to the International Office by 17 July 2026, with the
following documents:
- Justification of application (outstanding academic achievements by the candidate,
special activities and social commitment which justifies the allocation of the scholarship)
- Details about the candidate (field of study, major, academic year)
- Overview of academic achievements at the OVGU (certified by the Examination Office)
- CV in tabular form
- Proof of volunteer work
- In case of an application by oneself: letter of recommendation by a professor or lecturer.

2026 DAAD Award for Outstanding Achievements of International Students
The DAAD award honours one foreign student with outstanding academic achievements and exceptional social or intercultural commitment.
The candidate (no guest or exchange students) should usually be on an advanced level of his/her Bachelor's (at least second year) or Master's (at least second semester) degree. Postgraduates and PhD students can also be nominated.
The DAAD award is not a research award and it is not aimed at honouring a PhD project. It shall mainly be allocated to students or graduates who master their studies in their own right.
The award cannot be split up among several students. The prize money is 1,000 Euros.
The faculties have the right of nomination. Please nominate a qualified candidate by delivering a meaningful explanatory statement until 17 July 2026.
The nominations have to be submitted to the International Office.

About IKUS
IKUS is an intercultural student organization that supports international students in Magdeburg and connects them with other students. We are an intercultural team of OVGU Magdeburg and Hochschule Magdeburg-Stendal students.
We offer the possibility to let you have intercultural experiences while making friends. For this, we organize various parties, intercultural country nights, excursion etc.
In addition, IKUS offers continuous advice and support for international students in Magdeburg. We also support newly arrived students taking their first steps in Germany. We answer questions regarding to the German authorities and give advice and help with questions and problems related to studying in Magdeburg. Additionally, we organize our welcome weeks for freshmen.
It is our goal to facilitate (the begin of new) life episodes of international students in Magdeburg, to integrate them in the German society and support them in having intercultural friendships.
Would you like to gain intercultural competences and get to know many interesting people from many different countries, work together with other students, gather (first) experience in organizing events... and have a lot of fun doing that?
